A HISTORY OF THE BROWN FAMILY OF STOCKDALE, OHIO

This section is dedicated to the history of the David and Sallie Hubbard Brown family of Stockdale, Ohio. After encountering hardships in New England, David and Sallie made their way to the Ohio Territory eventually settling in what is present-day Stockdale, Ohio. The picture below shows David's grandson John Wesley Brown with his family.

Pictured ABOVE is a farm located near Stockdale, Ohio. This is the John Wesley and Martha Sampson Brown family. John Wesley was a grandson of David and Sallie Hubbard Brown. This photo was taken in 1907. Pictured left to right are John Wesley Brown hilding is baby daughter Charolotte, Martha Sampson Brown, Mary Brown with Verna Horton (Maggie Brown Horton's daughter) sitting in front of her, Ada Brown with Charles Horton sitting in front of her, Violet Brown (siting beside Charles), Maggie Brown Horton holding her daughter Hazel, Sadie Brown (standing), Will Horton holding his daughter Evelyn, and an unknown girl. The farm pictured was located on Posey Ridge Road between Stockdale and Beaver, Ohio. Today it is the site of Stoney Ridge Campground. The house was still standing until the 1990's when it was destroyed by fire. (Note: Since Evelyn Horton died around 1907, it is very likely this picture was taken shortly before her death).

A HISTORY OF THE DAVID AND SALLIE HUBBARD BROWN FAMILY

There is a story that has been in the Brown family for generations, and although this story has appeared in several books, historical records have not yet been found to substantiate it. The story tells of the Brown family emigrating from Scotland in April of 1646 and settling in Massachusetts. The family had a young son named Daniel Brown who would have been 8 to 10 years old at the time. All went well in the settlement until the night of November 8, 1646. It was on this night that a group of Native Americans attacked the settlement massacring all but young Daniel who managed to hide behind a chimney thus escaping their wrath. According to the story, the child waited until morning before he began walking 15 miles to the neighboring settlement. As a result of his perseverance, he was able to survive to marry and have three sons: Joseph, Amos, and David. It is at this point that nothing more is known about the family until David Brown was born in 1783 in New Hampshire or present day New York State. He is the first documented ancestor of the Brown family that can be found, and he was born on March 25, 1783.

David and Sallie had eight children only one of which was born in Pike County, Ohio. Their children were Ransom, Hulda, John H., Royal, David Brown, Jr., Nathan, William Harrison, and finally Joseph Jackson Brown.
Both David and Sallie as well as many of their children can be found buried in the Stockdale Cemetery in Stockdale, Ohio.

19TH AND 20TH CENTURIES

The following map depicts the history of land ownership by the Brown and Sampson families of Stockdale, Ohio as well as surrounding Marion Township, Pike County, Ohio. The information contained in this map was obtained from original land deeds found in an old doctor's bag owned by the Brown family. It was most likely passed down to John Wesley and Martha Sampson Brown since many of the receipts found in it pertain to them. Before that its history is unknown.

RED (Section 22) - This property was willed to William Batem Brown and his brother John Wesley Brown by their father William Harrison Brown on June 16, 1870. It was to be given to their younger brother David J. Brown when he reached legal age. This land was eventually owned by John Wesley and Martha Sampson Brown. In March 1930 they agreed to let the Ohio Oil Company drill here for oil. The agreement stated that they would get 1/8 of the profits, $100.00 per year if oil was found plus free oil for two stoves.

AQUA (Sections 21 and 22) - William J. Sampson bought this land from Hiriam and Selena Leaughlin on September 1, 1874. It had been previously purchased by Joseph Scurlock and Benjamin Johnson from Joseph and Mary Huff in 1865.

LIGHT BLUE (Section 21) - This land was bought by William J. Sampson from Rachel Prose a year after he bought the previous piece of property. It was purchased April 1, 1875.

BURGANDY (Section 22) - This land was bought by William H. Brown from John and Anna Lancaster on July 9, 1861. It was willed to William H. Brown's sons William Batem and John Wesley on June 16,1870.

TAN (Section 28) - This land was bought at a Sheriff's Auction by Nathan Brown April 4, 1876. It later became the farm of John Wesley Brown and his wife Martha Sampson Brown. It is where they raised their six daughters and was the site of the house pictured on this site's main page.

LIGHT PINK (Section 27) - This land was bought by William Harrison Brown from Joseph Jackson Brown and his wife Elizabeth on January 1, 1849.

BROWN (Section 28) - Martha Brown owned this land as of 1925 as indicated by tax records.

DARK PINK (Section 28) - William J. Sampson bought this land on November 20, 1874.

DARK BLUE (Section 33) - This was land owned by David and Sallie hubbard Brown. Their farm was likely located near here. This is also the area in which the Stockdale Cemetery is located. It may have begun as a family cemetery since many Browns are located here. This section of land was sold to David and Sallie's son William H. Brown on September 13, 1842.

LIGHT BLUE (Section 34) - The farm of David Sampson and Sarah Brouse Sampson was likely in this area. This is suspected since the bodies of David Sampson and three infants were buried in a field on Stockdale Road. The tombstones were later moved to the Stockdale Cemetery.

13. Elhoff rental to Ray Blakeman in the 1950's. Mark Stahl purchased it in 1956.

15. Private residence built sometime between 1949 and 1950.
16. Evertt McGaw - 1940's. He committed suicide in 1947. Bill Thompson lived here in the 1950's, and Richard and Byrd Nolen lived here in the 1960's.
17. Charlie Elhoff residence from 1930 to the 1940's. Elhoff rental in the 1950's. It was purchased by Jim Hern in 1955.
18. Private residence.
19. Private residence built in the 1950's.
20. Rental property bought by Otis Hanour in the 1950's
21. Smilley Blakeman Barbour Shop
22. Bill Jenkins home in the 1940's. Bill Thompson owned it in the 1950's.

24. Frank wilson Blacksmith Shop (1900-1930).
25. Rental property where Carl and Thelma Williams lived.
26. Ray and Murble Conkel's "new" house built in 1952.
27. Mart Emory house. It was a rental property. Carl and Thelma williams lived here from 1940 - 1950. The Clay Burns family lived here in the 1950's.
28. Ray and Murble Conkel's "old" house. They lived here in the early part of the 20th century. In the 1800's David and Catherine (Ray) Brown lived here. He had a livery stable and rented out horses.
29. O. E. Emory Grocery Store (1920's/1930's). H. Hickman -1940's. Windles - 1950's. During the 1950's there was an apartment above the grocery store.
30. Ray Conkel's Garage. The present building was built during the fifties replacing an older wooden one that was much smaller.
31. Mel Brown, 1930's. Rental (Wilma Brown - Shively, 1940-1950). Bill Thompson purchased it in the 1950's.
32. Dr Paul Jones' private residence and office. In the 1940's Henry and Goldie Leake lived here. Later Susan Osbourne lived here. In the 1950's Jasper Lansing lived here. His wife Barbie lived for years as a bed-ridden invalid.
33. Part of Number 29. Mel Brown used this as his office.
34. In the 1920's Dr. Dixon had his office here and lived in this house. In the 1930's Jimmy Warne had a funeral home here, and the back was a private residence. In the 1940's the Hyde family lived here. In the 1950's Nell Lang and son Robert lived here. One side of the structure was converted into an apartment for rental.
35-1. Ed Daniels lived here from 1930 until sometime in the 1940's. Levi Lykins lived here in the forties and fifties.

35-2. Vestie Bennett - 1930's; Bill White - 1940's and 1950's.

39. Original K of P Lodge Hall. Built in the early 1900's, this was an establishment for men only. It was a social area where the men had meetings after which they would play pool or cards in the downstairs area. In the 1950's it was used for weekly movies. It was destroyed by fire in the 1960's.

43. Originally a one room shop used for many purposes. In the 1920's Sadie and Ada Brown operated a milinary shop in this location. At one time Kendall Blakeman had a barber shop here. Later it was converted into a two-room rental.
63. Back Street residence. Small house owned by the Lykins family. It was destroyed by fire the same time as the Lodge Hall.
65. Small three room house that was a rental property owned by Dwight Bennett.
67 - 1. Larger two-story house. Pearlie Lyons and her mother lived here in the 1940's. It was also a rental property owned by Dwight Bennett. Later Sennie Berry and mother lived here.
67 - 2. Residence originally owned by Sport Reed and wife Melissa. Following her death, his daughter and son-in-law, Blanche and Howard Turner, moved in with him.
69. Site of Stockdale Elementary which was built in 1905. Originally, it housed grades 1-8, but later it only housed grades 1 and 2. The building no longer stands, and a private residence is now on this site.
71. Site of the first Stockdale High School. Built in the 1920's, this school saw its first graduating class in 1922. It did not remain the high school for long because a new high school was built in 1925. There is now a private residence on this site.

- Stockdale Cemetery - Located on what is today the intersection of State Route 335 and California Pike, this is the burial site of many of the Brown family ancestors. including David and Sallie Hubbard Brown.
